Ideas and Influences on Eranos – Historical Influences – Part I
Almost a century ago, Olga Fröbe-Kapteyn brought forth an intellectual gathering known as the Eranos conferences. The expressed intention was to bring together ideas from East and West at Ascona. It was a project of deep collective thinking with thinkers from History of Religion, Philology, Theology, Philosophy, and Psychology, spurred by an urgency to answer questions such as: What does it mean to be human? What is life’s ultimate purpose and aim? What are we here for?

These matters had largely been ignored during the past decades. Instead, Modernity’s breakthrough was a culmination of unprecedented advancements in science, technology, society, and psychology. And yet, after the First World War, Europe and the West found themselves in a spiritual void. Civilization had come to a tragic dead-end.

The interest and study of Comparative Religion had begun to flourish around the turn of the 20th century, albeit in a Christian setting, in part thanks to initiatives such as the Theosophical movement. What role did the increased interest in and study of world religions play in the formation of Eranos and other similar projects? What led them to seek answers to their questions in different traditions of thought? What were the organising ideas that drove them to participate in this extraordinary endeavour? And how far are we today from the context that motivated them?

In order to revitalise the study of Religion, we wish to investigate the driving thoughts of those to whom this field was at the forefront of intellectual necessity. At this seminar, we will hear from a multidisciplinary group of scholars of diverse yet relevant topics such as German Romanticism, History of Religion and Ideas and Psychology, revisiting the impact of thinkers such as Ernst Haeckel, Hans Dreisch and Charles Darwin, Hans Jonas, Rudolph Otto, William James, Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, C G Jung, and Mircea Eliade.
