Multicultural Societies – Multiculturalism in the Roman Empire
Many societies around the world are multicultural, either explicitly, like Sweden since the Riksdag decision in 1975, or in practice. The transformation in Sweden has happened relatively quickly and as a result of globalisation and refugee flows, a multitude of cultures from all continents now coexist in Sweden.
Like many other western nations, Sweden is, according to quantitative studies such as the World Value Survey, individualistic; characterised by secularity and self-fulfillment. This makes a contrast to the traditional and survivalist values often held by those who have found a new home here, and puts questions of culture and coexistence to a head. Is there any way in which these moral systems can be integrated into western society? Which opportunities and challenges does it pose?
To find answers we will look abroad and through history to compare with other multicultural nations and empires with significantly longer experience.
