Mental Health – Peter Degerman: Examining Mental Illness Through Literature and Art
How has mental illness been represented in literature and art? And how has this representation shaped our understanding of it? With a focus on André Breton’s novel Nadja, Associate Professor of Literature Peter Degerman explores the surrealist movement’s romanticized view on mental illness. A perspective that, in a sense, can be traced all the way back to antiquity and Plato’s notion of Furor Poeticus, revealing a long-standing cultural fascination with the link between madness and creativity.

Peter Degerman is an Associate Professor of Literature and the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Human Sciences at Mid Sweden University in Sundsvall. Among his published works is the novel The Dark Side of the Moon (2023), which explores the relationship between mental health and literature.

This Engelsberg Interview is led by Patrik Hadenius, linguist, publicist, and former Publishing Director at Norstedts Förlagsgrupp.
