Mental Health – Eva Henje: Psilocybin and the Future of Depression Treatment
Drawing on the latest research into substances like psilocybin and MDMA, we examine their potential not just to relieve symptoms, but to enable lasting psychological healing. Eva Henje, Professor at Umeå University, discusses how psychedelics affect the brain, the importance of integration with psychotherapy, and the risks — such as retraumatisation — when treatment isn’t handled with care.

Eva Henje is a Professor and Senior Consultant Specialist in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Umeå University, specialising in trauma, stress-related, and affective disorders. Her research focuses on improving assessment and diagnostics while developing non-pharmacological treatments for youth facing trauma, anxiety, depression, and emotional dysregulation. Current projects include the Training for Awareness Resilience and Action (TARA) programme for adolescent depression and research into the therapeutic potential of MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine in treating depression.

This Engelsberg Interview is led by Patrik Hadenius, linguist, publicist, and former Publishing Director at Norstedts Förlagsgrupp.
