The Roman Imperial Cult | Amber Gartrell
In ancient Rome, emperors were sometimes deified and worshipped. Amber Gartrell, Lecturer in Roman History at University College London, discusses the origins and development of the Roman imperial cult, with particular attention to its spread in the eastern provinces. She examines how the cult varied across regions, the position of deified emperors within the divine hierarchy, and the political as well as religious functions it served within the empire.
The interview, conducted by author and editor Paul Lay, was recorded as part of a three-day seminar on the history of the Middle East, titled Empires of Faith.
